Georgia Tech’s Anchor Institution Mission and Role

In 2020, Georgia Tech President Ángel Cabrera unveiled a 10-year strategic plan with an ambitious vision to amplify impact, champion innovation, connect globally, expand access, cultivate well-being, and lead by example. The Strategic Plan called on campus to serve as an anchor, collaborator, and convener for students, faculty, and staff, and the establishment of Anchor Institution Strategy to advance Georgia Tech's community engagement impact.

To execute this call to action, a team of our colleagues formed the Anchor Institution Coordination Council (AICC). The AICC is a cross-institutional committee of 15+ departments, connecting various community-related initiatives to ensure the Institute is employing best practices and achieving maximum impact.

Georgia Tech’s Anchor Institution Coordination Council (AICC)

The role of Georgia Tech AICC is to streamline and maximize communication, coordination, and collaboration across community-related initiatives in Georgia to ensure we [Georgia Tech] are employing best practices in community engagement and achieving maximum community impact.

The AICC's Call to Action includes:

Communicate:

  • Deepen campus community understanding of the Anchor Institution framework, threading components of our campus research, academic, and operational functions within the community engagement framework.

Collaborate:

  • Create a dynamic portal for community partners navigating opportunities for campus engagement.

Coordinate:

  • Serve as a catalyst connector for Westside communities to campus.
  • Cultivate connections and advocate for the students, faculty, and staff engaged in community-engaged teaching, learning, research, and outreach.
